\u00abTim Gowers is not your typical blogger. A mathematician at Cambridge University, Gowers is a recipient of the highest honor in mathematics, the Fields Medal, often called the Nobel Prize of mathematics. His blog<\/strong> <\/a>radiates mathematical ideas and insight.<\/em><\/p>\n

In January 2009, Gowers decided to use his blog to run a very unusual social experiment. He picked out an important and difficult unsolved mathematical problem, a problem he said he\u00b4d \u00ablove to solve.\u00bb But instead of attacking the problem on his own, or with a few close colleagues, he decided to attack the problem completely in the open, using his blog to post ideas and partial progress. <\/strong>What\u00b4s more, he issued an open invitation asking other people to help out. Anyone could follow along and, if they had an idea, explain it in the comments section of the blog. Gowers\u00a0hoped that many minds would be more powerful than one, that they would estimulate each other with different expertise and perspectives, and collectively make easy work of his hard mathematical problem. He dubbed the experiment the Polymath Project.<\/strong><\/a><\/em> \u00ab<\/p>\n

Matem\u00e1tico de la Universidad de Cambridge, Gowers posee lo que se considera como el m\u00e1s alto honor en matem\u00e1ticas, la Medalla Fields, a menudo llamado el Premio Nobel de matem\u00e1ticas. En enero de 2009, Gowers decidi\u00f3 utilizar su blog para poner en marcha un inusual experimento social. Escogi\u00f3 un problema matem\u00e1tico especialmente dif\u00edcil e importante, un problema\u00a0que dijo \u00able gustar\u00eda resolver.\u00bb Pero en lugar de afrontar el problema por su cuenta, o con algunos colegas cercanos, decidi\u00f3 afrontarlo de una forma completamente abierta, utilizando su blog para publicar las ideas y los progresos parciales. Pero no s\u00f3lo eso: adem\u00e1s\u00a0envi\u00f3 una invitaci\u00f3n pidiendo ayuda a otras personas. Cualquiera pod\u00eda seguir su desarrollo y, si ten\u00edan una idea, explicarla en la secci\u00f3n de comentarios del blog. Gowers ten\u00eda la esperanza de que la mente de muchos ser\u00eda m\u00e1s poderosa que la de uno solo, que se estimular\u00edan unos a otros con diferentes experiencias y perspectivas, y que el conjunto facilitar\u00eda el trabajo de resolver su complicado problema matem\u00e1tico.
